Video Game Pricing 2006 to 2012

Secordary market prices for GBDS, PS2, Xbox and Game Cube determined by buy back prices from 2006 to 2012

The graph compares the prices performance of four superseded video game formats we have been tracking since 2006. Prices are determined by the buy prices.

The Video game index consisted of 70 video games: ten Nintendo DS, twenty Playstation 2 games, twenty Xbox games and twenty Game Cube Games. Note that the current generation of formats were not included (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii). In an earlier post we charted the performance of video games vs the DVD market where the downward pricing pressure hasn’t had the impact is has with video games.

My take. The highly fragmented video game market continues to witness increased competitive pressures such as from mobile phones and online alternatives, which would have absorbed the supply of used games. For example Zynga, one of the hottest video game companies, sees most of its sales from games played on Facebook. Other top selling games like Plants Vs Zombies and Angry Birds obtain most of their sales from iOS.
